Description
Lots of teachers draw heavily from Thomas C. Foster’s timeless classic, “How to Read Literature Like a Professor” – but how do we really get our students to read like professors?
In this video, I showcase a gamified version of “What’s In Ned’s Head” using Rita Dove’s poem “Flashcards”
I contend that good readers are good readers because they know how to ask the good, juicy questions of a text.
And good readers also recognize that literature has patterns: here’s a new poem that you’ve never seen before … follow the pattern in terms of your analytical approach … and go literary term hunting.
Instead of skilling-n-drilling with endless M.C. test prep, I often gamify my instruction to ensure that students know how to question a text – a skill that good test takers have.
The game slides in the YouTube video are available for download.
